How to apply to foster

Becoming a foster carer isn’t as difficult as you might think. The process is clear and straightforward and the team from South Gloucestershire will guide and help you.

You can call us on 01454 866423 and speak to one of our team, you can download our brochure or you can complete our online form.

After an initial chat and if you want to find out more, we will complete a questionnaire with you over the telephone at a time that is convenient.

Once that is complete you will then follow this 6 step procedure:

Step 1

You will be invited to attend an information evening where you will learn more about fostering in order to think through whether fostering is right for you and your family.

You may decide you wish to proceed further at this stage and go on to complete part one of the application form.

Step 2

After the information evening you will be offered a home visit by a social worker. This will provide the opportunity to discuss why you want to become a foster carer, the skills and experience you already have and will need and your family’s capacity to foster. This visit will also provide you with the opportunity to ask any further questions you may have at this stage.

Step 3

If you decide that fostering is appropriate for you and your family, and you can offer a home to an older child/young person or a sibling group, you will be asked to attend a Skills to Foster training course and you will be able to complete part two of the application form.

Step 4

We will undertake an assessment with you and your family to ensure you are suitable to foster in line with the National Minimum Fostering Standards. We aim to complete assessments within 4-6 months. We will undertake the required checks and references during this assessment stage.

Step 5

The social worker who has completed your assessment will submit the assessment report to independent Fostering Panel. You can comment on the report before it is submitted and you will be invited to attend the Panel meeting considering your assessment.

Step 6

If approved, you’ll be registered as a foster carer for South Gloucestershire.
