Albert was born in St. George in Bristol, the son of a warehouse man and the eldest child of six with three brothers and two sisters. Albert married Beatrice Bennett Robinson in 1907 and in 1911 they were living in Norwich. Their son Gordon Albert was born in July 1911 and was aged just six when his father died.

Albert's battalion (the 2nd Battalion, Highland Light Infantry) mobilised to France in August 1914 and fought in the Battle and Retreat from Mons and The Battles of The Somme and Ypres. On the 3rd March 1918 Albert was admitted to field hospital suffering from pleurisy. On 21st March he was transferred in the sick convoy, back to the base hospital at Etaples where he died two weeks later.
