Alfred was born in Staple Hill, a middle child of six children with two sisters and three brothers. He was the son of a Staple Hill baker and along with an older sister and brother, helped out in the family business.

Alfred served with the 58th Battalion, Central Ontario Regiment, Canadian Infantry

Alfred died on the last day of the Battle of Mount Sorrel, a battle to hold on to high ground in the Ypres Salient. In a letter to his parents, his commanding officer described him as “A good soldier in every way” and said that his loss would be greatly mourned
