Further information:

Alfred arrived in France with the D-Day landings on the 6th June. It is likely that his Service Corps role at that time was supportive of the 1st Battalion Suffolk Regiment who took Coleville-Sur-Orne on the first day as it was the place where Alfred was initially buried. Over the following days the regiment pursued more objectives to the south of the town before marching onto Caen and the fighting between the 6th and the 12th June was bitter with many casualties including Alfred.
