Alfred was born in Kingswood, the son of a bootmaker and the middle child of three with an older sister Ella and a younger brother Clifford. On leaving school, he worked as a bootmaker like his father. His sister Ella married Harry Britton in 1912 and they emigrated to Canada with Alfred and the rest of his family.

Alfred served with the 44th Battalion, Canadian Infantry, 2nd Battalion Machine Gun Corps.

Alfred enlisted in the Canadian Infantry in December 1914 and was described as 5' 7 ½ " tall with fair hair, light blue eyes and a dark complexion. He sailed to England with Canadian Expeditionary Force in September 1915 and in February 1916 went over to France. Alfred fought at the Front from March 1916 until the end of the war and on the 7th of May 1917 he sustained a wrist wound to but was returned to active duty after 5 days.

Alfred continued in military service after the armistice and in January 1919 was awarded the Military Medal in recognition of an act of bravery in battle during the war, but there is no record of what the act was. Alfred married Ena Tryphena Britton who was a younger sister of Alfred's brother-in-law, Harry, in June 1919 and the couple returned to Canada two months later. Alfred was finally demobbed in August 1919 but sadly he died in the September, but the cause of his death is not known. In 1920 after Alfred’s death Ena returned to Soundwell Avenue, Kingswood.
