Archie was born in Iron Acton the son of John and Sabrina Cater, his father John Cater was a railway signalman who was born in Warwickshire. There were 12 children in the family, Sarah, William, Martha, Ellen, Ivy, George, Ada-Mary, Harry, Sidney, Archibald, Albert (Frank) and Hubert. The three brothers, Archibald, Albert (Frank) and Hubert went to Canada prior to 1914 and they all returned to fight with the Ist Battalion of the Canadian Infantry, Western Ontario Regiment

All 3 died in the First World War. Hubert and Frank were killed on the same day, 22nd September 1916 and Archie in 1918. All are remembered on the Vimy Ridge Memorial near Arras in France

Archibald Leonard Cater and his two brothers are remembered on the Yate Lych Gate Memorial and the Chipping Sodbury and District War Memorial Cottage Hospital board, which is now at Yate and District Heritage Centre, under Yate
