Further information:

De Panne, a village in Belgium close to Dunkirk Beach, is where Arthur is buried and was the site of the final General Headquarters of the British Expeditionary Force. The Germans strove to prevent evacuation of the troops by incessant bombing, machine-gunning and shelling. The first German troops reached De Panne on 31 May, and after heavy fighting during which Arthur was killed, it was completely occupied by the Germans the next day.
