Further information:

The birth registration was in the name of Vincent Augustus Howse. However later records switch the Christian names to Augustus Vincent or just Augustus.

On the 1901 and 1911 Census, he was recorded as a boarder/lodger in the home of William and Laura Howes, possibly his grandparents. The 1901 household also included an Alice Howes (age 25), the daughter of William and Laura. He was recorded on the both Censuses as just Augustus Vincent (the surname Howse was not used) and was probably illegitimate.

The soldier’s effects were left to his Aunt Mary Ann Howse (never married). Alice Howse, who was possibly his mother, died in 1910 age 35.

Augustus served with the 2nd/5th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment and was Killed in Action on 22 August 1917.
