Further information:

Clifford was born in Kingswood, the son of a bootmaker and the eldest child of three with a younger sister and younger brother.

Clifford enlisted in the 15th Battalion, Warwickshires in the Birmingham Pals Battalion and was posted to France in November 1915. In 1916 the battalion fought in the Battles of The Somme (1 July - 18 November 1916) and on the day that Clifford was wounded, they were not taking part in any significant engagement. It is likely therefore that Clifford was a casualty of the ongoing trench warfare that resulted in around 300 deaths per day throughout the war. On 22/12/1916 Clifford was taken to 14th Field Ambulance Station with a shrapnel wound to his back and was transferred to 33rd casualty clearing station which was situated in the town of Bethune. Five days later Clifford died there from his wounds and was buried in the town cemetery.
