Benjamin Smith was born in 1887 in St. George in Bristol. His parents were Benjamin and Mary Smith who lived at Sandringham House in Winterbourne. His siblings were Mary, Kate, Winnie and Annie. His father had worked as a boot top cutter and he had been born in St. George in Bristol

Benjamin was married to Gwendolen Davis Smith. They lived at “St. Quentin”in Dragon Road in Winterbourne

Benjamin joined the 7th Battalion of the Rifle Brigade as a rifleman. He died in March 1918 at the age of 31. He is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial (Ref: Panel 81 to 84) in the Somme in France
