Bertie served with the 9th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry and was Killed in Action on 4 April 1945.

In January 1945, the 9th Battalion was reinforced and transferred to 7th Armoured Division as a motorised Battalion which fought at the Roer Triangle in January 1945. The Battalion crossed the River Ems on April 3rd to capture the town of Ibbenbüren. They succeeded after a stiff fight against snipers during which Private George lost his life.
