Charles was born in Berkeley, Gloucestershire, the son of a labourer and a middle child of ten children with three brothers and six sisters. Charles married Mary Ann Holder in July 1910 and together they had six children four boys and two girls with the eldest Frederick, born in October 1910 and the youngest Florence born in 1928. Charles undertook war service but the details or this are not known. In 1939 Charles was working as an engine driver at the brickworks and living at 24 Central Farm, Thornbury. At the time of his death in 1962, Charles was living at Walnut Tree Cottage, Littleton and Mary Ann had pre-deceased him by 11 years.
