Son of a clergyman he was the eldest of 2 brothers. He married in 1938. In the early morning of the 6th June the Sacramento Valley, who was carrying coal between Cardiff and Brazil, was hit on the port side in the engine room by a torpedo from U-106 250 miles northwest of the Cape Verde Islands. Charles was killed along with two Indian firemen, but the master, 39 crew members and six gunners escaped in 3 lifeboats. The ship sank 10 minutes after the hit.
