Clifford took part in the battle of Jutland in 1915, later transferring to the Merchant Navy. On the day of his death, Clifford was serving aboard the Merchant Ship S.S. "Umgeni" which left Liverpool in convoy for Lagos on 7th November 1917. The ship was last spoken to on 9th November and not heard of subsequently. The Umgeni was thought to have foundered in a gale to the West of Ireland and all thirty people on board including Clifford were presumed lost at sea.
