Cyril was born in East London and was the son of a book binder. He had 2 older brothers and a sister and in 1939 was living in lodgings in Edmonton near to his mother and sister.

At the time of his death, Cyril was based at the Larkhill Artillery School on the Wiltshire Hampshire border. He died as a result of accidental drowning when he fell into the Floating Harbour at Narrow Quay in Bristol. He is buried in Bath Cemetery but his headstone carries no personal message.
