Douglas was born in Tunbridge Wells Kent, the eldest son of a gardener and florist and one of eight children. Douglas had two sisters and five brothers one of whom died as a child. In 1890 he married Lucy Powell Bragg and together they had two sons and a daughter. In 1908, Douglas was living in Downend and working as a printer at Taylor Brothers printers in central Bristol, when he enlisted in the Territorial Force of the 3rd Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment.

Douglas was called up in 1914 and served in the 6th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment. His battalion was mobilised and moved to France in March of 1915 then went on to fight in the Battles of the Somme in the summer and autumn of 1916. Douglas was invalided out due to sickness on 7th November 1916 at the age of 54 and his death was registered in Bristol 4 years later.
