Edward was the eldest child of George and Elizabeth, who had eight children in total. But at the time of his birth, Edward's mother was not married, and he was registered as George Edward Watkins (His mother’s maiden name was Watkins). His parents married in the 3rd quarter 1889, just before their second child Henry was born. One of the military records record him as George Edward Curtis.

At the time of the 1911 Census, Edward had left the family home and was in lodgings in Thornbury.

Edward served with the 7th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment and Died of Wounds in Mesopotamia on 19 April 1916
