Further information:

Edward was born in Hanham, the second youngest child of a bootmaker with two brothers and a sister. Edward's father died when he was just 2 years old and by 1898 his mother had married Sam a sign writer and the family had moved to London. Edward subsequently acquired four younger half-sisters and two younger half-brothers. Edward married Frances Elizabeth Gregory in 1914 and their first child, also Edward, was born the same year. Their youngest child Gilbert was born 18 days after Edward died. Edward's older brother Gilbert Frederick, also died on active service 3 years before Edward.

Edward enlisted in the King's Royal Rifle Corps (22728) transferring to the 10th Battalion, Lancashires in October 1916 when he left for France with the British Expeditionary Force and fought in the Battles of the Somme. Edward died six months after arriving in France. He was killed in action on the first day of the Battles of Arras, during the First Battle of the Scarpe (9–14 April 1917). The outcome of the Battles of Arras (9 April – 16 May 1917) was indecisive at a cost to the allies of 158,000 casualties.
