Edwin's battalion (the 3rd, Monmouthshire Regiment) mobilised to France in February 1915 and fought in the Second Battle of Ypres (22 April – 25 May 1915) during which Edwin was killed in action. The outcome of the battle was inconclusive but resulted in around 80,000 allied casualties. Edwin's body was never found and the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, where he is remembered, bears the names of more than 54,000 soldiers who died in Belgium and who have no known grave.
