Ernest was born in Durham, the son of an engineer and one of five children.

Ernest went over to France with the 4th battalion as part of the British Expeditionary Force. The BEF was subsequently defeated by the Germans and forced to retreat. Most of Ernest’s battalion were evacuated from Dunkirk between the 26th May and 4th June 1940, but Ernest was among those left behind to fight allowing the main body of troops to escape. Ernest was wounded, taken prisoner of war and died of his wounds just four weeks after the last boats had left.
