Ernest George Gray was the son of George and Virtue Gray. Ernest was born in Pilning in 1894. George Gray was a brick worker in a brickyard. The family lived at Crosshands, Almondsbury, Thornbury. In the 1911 census Ernest was 17 years old and a brick worker like his father, living at Shaymoor Lane in Pilning with his parents

Ernest was a regular soldier, Private, No.242238 with “A” Company, 1st/5th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment. He died on 30th June 1918, aged 26 years and is buried in the Magnaboschi British Cemetery in Italy

The 1st/5th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment was part of the South Midland Brigade, South Midland Division. On mobilisation they moved to the Isle of Wight, then Swindon, then Maldon in Essex, finally in March 1915 they landed at Boulogne. In May 1915 the formation became the 145th Brigade, 48th (South Midland) Division. In November 1917 the Division, moved to Italy where Ernest died. The Magnaboschi British Cemetery contains 183 burials of the First World War
