Ernest was the son of William and Elizabeth Dowsell and the brother of Beatrice, Herbert, Bessie and George. His father worked as an agricultural labourer and was born in Old Sodbury. Ernest was a haulier and lived with his wife Amelia and daughter Winifred Maud in Pontygarth in South Wales

Ernest served with the 1st Battalion, Grenadier Guards, he was aged 34 when he was Killed in Action in France. Ernest is remembered on the Cambrai Memorial (ref: Panel 2.), Louverval in France
