Born in Mangotsfield, son of a leather cutter in the boot industry. Eldest of five children with one brother and three sisters.

Frederick's battalion the 2nd/6th, served on the Western Front. They fought along with the 2nd/4th in their first significant action on 19th July 1916. It was an unsuccessful attack in the Battle of Fromelles which cost the two battalions a total of 332 casualties including Frederick.
