Francis was the son of a cowman and the eldest of 3 children. He had 2 younger sisters. He married Nellie Sibley in 1927 and together they had 2 sons.

Francis was an Able Seaman who lost his life when his ship, HMS Nubian, was hit by a bomb near Crete.

On the 26th May, during the battle of Crete (20th May – 1st June) The Nubian was bombed and her stern was blown off. She was badly damaged but repairable, however, 7 of her crew including Francis were killed, and another 12 were wounded. (Although CWGC say he died on 28th May, his Naval records confirm the 26th May).
