George was born in St Philips and St Jacob, Bristol, the son of a stableman and the eldest of two brothers.
At the age of 18, in 1906, George enlisted in the Navy for 12 years and was described as 5'5" tall with light brown hair and grey eyes. In 1911 he was stationed at Devonport Plymouth. George served on various ships before and after the Great War. During the war he served aboard the Benbow and fought in the Battle of Jutland (31 May – 1 June 1916) which was a naval battle between Britain's Royal Navy Grand Fleet and the Imperial German Navy's High Seas Fleet. The Benbow was the 4th Division's flagship and she sustained no damage or casualties during the battle. Both sides claimed victory and there were over 6000 allied casualties. George's last ship according to his Naval records was the Lion and his last day of service before demobilisation was 26th May 1919.
Note George Ettle is not on the CWGC website as he did not die during the war.
