George was married to Cissie Doris Alice Clark. They had one son John born in 1930. George died in the sinking of the SS Lancastria during evacuation from St Nazaire in France after the battle of France. The overloaded liner was evacuating civilians and soldiers when it was bombed by the Luftwaffe who proceeded to strafe survivors in the water. A total of around 4000 people were killed.

There is a discrepancy in the records regarding his date of birth. It was either 1888 or 1900.
