Owen's father was a farmer and he was the youngest of three brothers, all of whom worked on the farm. When he enlisted in 1916, his parents had moved to Queens Charlton near Keynsham.

Owen had contracted Malaria whilst serving with his regiment in Egypt and the Sudan which had made his health a lot worse. He returned to Australia on 15/1/19 and died in Hospital shortly afterwards on 07/02/1919 (cause of death given as Hodgkin’s disease and tuberculosis).

His older brother Charles Watts George also died in the war.
