Gerald Harvey Barnfield was born on 19th December 1897 in Rangeworthy. His parents were William and Sarah Jane Barnfield (nee Harvey). His three siblings were Florence, Victor and Ronald. The family lived at New Road in Rangeworthy in 1901, but had moved to Lowden in Chippenham by 1911

George enlisted in the 6th Battalion of the Wiltshire Regiment, but he transferred to the 1st Battalion of the Duke of Edinburgh’s (Wiltshire) Regiment. He was Killed in Action in July 1917 at the age of 19. He is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres in Belgium. He is also commemorated on the Rangeworthy Methodist Chapel Memorial Plaque which is now in Rangeworthy Parish Church. He was awarded the British War and the Victory medals
