Gilbert attended the Boys school in Kingswood.
Gilbert was admitted to Craiglockhart Psychiatric Hospital with neurasthenia aka shell shock on 7th May 1918 and was discharged back to duty on 31st May. He was then aged 24 he had served for 3 years 3 months with 2 years of it in the field. He was issued with the Silver War Badge 14 October 1918. He is not listed on the CWGC website, as it is likely that he served and returned.
