Gilbert's battalion (the 2nd) fought in the Burma Campaign and Gilbert died during the Battle of Kohima (4 April – 22 June 1944) which was a victory for the allies and a turning point in the war against Japan. He was originally buried near Kohima and reburied at Imphal in 1946.
