Gordon was born in Sheffield the son of a labourer and the second youngest of five children with two sisters and two brothers.

Gordon joined the 1st Royal Marine Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Marine Group, Mobile Naval Base Defence Organisation No.1 (MNBDO1) which was formed in September 1939 for the beach defence of Naval bases using Bofors Anti-Aircraft guns among other weapons. Gordon had been living in Malaxa on Crete for a month before he was killed in action two days into the Battle of Crete (20 May – 1 June 1941) by a low flying enemy aircraft. The Battle of Crete began with a German airborne attack and ended in an Axis victory with 23,000 Allied casualties. Gordon and two other men who were killed by the same aircraft, were initially buried at Vamos village on Crete then reburied at Suda Bay Greece after the war.
