Henry Joseph Chappell was born in 1867 in Luckington in Wiltshire. He was baptised on the 13th October 1867. He was the second son of James and Sarah Chappell. Henry Joseph married Mary Jane Townsend on 29th December 1888 and they had 13 children.

Henry Joseph served with the Royal Engineers (160778 Pioneer, Railway Troops Depot). He was discharged on 25th July 1917 due to “sickness”. He died on 12th May 1920 of an abscess of the lung and haemoptysis which was possibly caused by gassing in the trenches. He died at the age of 53 and he is buried in Wickwar, but his grave cannot be found. He is remembered on the Wickwar War Memorials and on the Chipping Sodbury District Cottage Hospital Memorial Board which is now at Yate and District Heritage Centre
