Herbert Ernest Percival Tanner was born in Wickwar in 1891 to parents, George and Annie Tanner (nee Cuff) of Frith Road, Wickwar. He was brother to Isaac, Amy, Harriet, Edith, George, Baden Powell, Louisa, Elsie and Mary. Herbert's father worked as a tailor and had been born in Wickwar. Herbert was working as a farm labourer in 1911. Herbert is related to Mrs Gwen Prue who is a Wickwar resident and there is a family tree on the Wickwar WW1 file in Yate and District Heritage Centre

Herbert joined the Royal Marine Light Infantry as a private. He was a member of the Portsmouth Battalion, Royal Naval Division. Herbert died on the 8th May 1915 at the age of 24

Herbert Ernest Percival Tanner is commemorated on the Helles Memorial Gallipoli, Canakkale, Turkey (Panel 2 to 7) and also on the Wickwar Holy Trinity Church Memorial, the Wickwar Village Hall Memorial and the Chipping Sodbury and District War Memorial Cottage Hospital board, which is now at Yate and District Heritage Centre, under Wickwar

He was awarded the 1914-15 Star, the British and the Victory War medals
