Harold served with the 3rd Battalion, Coldstream Guards.

He died in Sicily when his Battalion was assisting the Allies in gaining control of Hill 270 (the Capella ridge) a German strategic strongpoint North of Salerno. This was apparently needed in order to secure the beachhead after the allied landing on Italian soil. The losses sustained by the Guards during the battle for the hill were heavy – 120 casualties. He is commemorated on the Salerno War Cemetery, Sicily
