Further information:

Henry was born in Olveston, the son of a blacksmith and the eldest child of four, with three younger sisters. He was a former patrol leader with the Olveston Scout troop.

Henry was only 17 when he enlisted in the army at the outbreak of war and died just six months later. With the 1st Battalion he was mobilised to France in August 1914 where they fought in the Retreat from Mons and the Battles of the Marne and Messines. Henry was killed in action during the Battle of St Julien, one of the Battles of Ypres (22 April – 25 May 1915). The outcome of the Battles of Ypres was inconclusive at a cost of 80,000 allied casualties. Henry's body was never identified and the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, where he is remembered, bears the names of more than 54,000 soldiers who died in Belgium and who have no known grave.
