On the 1911 Census, Herbert lived with his parents in The Mill, Frenchay along with 5 brothers and one sister. In total his parents had nine children.

Herbert enlisted in Coleford and served with the "D" Battery, 105th Battalion of the Royal Field Artillery. Herbert was gassed in 1917 and was Killed in Action on the 21st March 1918 in France.

Herbert is commemorated on the Frenchay (St John the Baptist Church) memorial and the Hambrook (Whiteshill Common) Memorial.
