Herbert married Gladys Lilian Knight in Kingswood during the 3rd quarter of 1939.

Herbert John Bateman served with the 4th Battalion, Somerset Light Infantry. Herbert’s Battalion took part in the Normandy campaign and as part of the 43rd Wessex Infantry Division fought in a vicious battle for Hill 112 during which there were heavy casualties on both sides. Herbert was mortally wounded during this battle and died on the 13th of July.
