Herbert was stationed at RAF Ludford Magna Lincolnshire, 101 Squadron, Bomber Command and on the night of his death his Lancaster Bomber LM389 was taking part in a bombing raid on Berlin. It was the first and last mission for this crew. The plane returned from Berlin but was unable to land owing to very poor visibility due to fog at ground level. Herbert’s plane was diverted to Yorkshire where it crashed just outside the village of Eastrington. He died along with 5 other members of the crew including the 20-year old pilot. It was the worst night of the war for air accidents with 30 bombers crashing on return killing 131 aircrew.
