Herbert Summerhill (Summerill in some records) was born in March 1888 in Bitton, Bristol. The son of Stephen and Elizabeth Summerhill, he was one of three children, his siblings were Stephen and Edward. The family home was in Soundwell, Bristol.

Herbert was married to Daisy (nee Leigh) in January 1910, they lived together in Gloucester Road, Soundwell, Bristol, with their daughter Elsie May.

Herbert was a Boot Trade Clicker until he joined up originally with the Shropshire Light Infantry, 1st Battalion (formerly Gloucester Regiment 51859) as a Private.

He was Killed in Action in Flanders, France at the age of 30 years and is buried at the High Tree Cemetery, Montbrehain, Aisne, France.

His brother Stephen died on 12 September 1918, after being injured in battle and invalided back to England. The cause of his death was attributed to military service.
