John Thomas was born in 1894, 3rd quarter and Baptised at St James Church, Westerleigh on 8/03/1896. On the 1911 Census, John Thomas was living with his parents and three younger sisters in Westerleigh. His father was also a coal miner.

The No. 31 Casualty clearing station (CCS), Dedeagatch, Greece record book notes that John Thomas was serving with the 9th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment (he previously served in 2nd Battalion, Glosters) and was attached to No. 78 Company Machine Gun Corps. He was recorded as dead on admission to the CCS during the Influenza pandemic. The separate pension card states that when taken ill, he was serving in Bulgaria. He probably fell ill there and was transported to the CCS in Greece.
