Joseph Slade was born in 1892 in Rangeworthy to parents, Joseph and Marianne Slade and was brother to Wilfred and Sarah. Their father was a farmer who had been born in Lacock, but died in 1902 aged 39 years. Their widowed mother then lived, with the children at Hill View in Old Sodbury.

Joseph enlisted in Bristol and served with the 1st Battalion of Prince Albert's Regiment (Somerset Light Infantry) as a Lance Corporal. Joseph died on the 13th June 1915 aged 23 years, he is buried in Talana Farm Cemetery (Ref Q. II. J. 17.), West Vlaanderen, Belgium. He was awarded the Victory, British War and 1914/15 Star medals.

Joseph Slade is mentioned on both the Old Sodbury, St John's Church memorial and the Chipping Sodbury and District Memorial Cottage Hospital board, now at Yate and District Heritage Centre.
