Lewis was born in Doynton, the son of a farm labourer and the second youngest of six children with a sister and five brothers. Lewis's mother died in 1900 when Lewis was aged 13.

Lewis enlisted in the 2nd Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment serving in peacetime and in 1911 he was stationed at Malta. His battalion was mobilised for war and landed at Le Havre in December 1914 but Lewis was not involved in any wartime action as he died in the 12th General Hospital in Rouen just a few weeks after arriving in France. The cause of his death is not known.
