Montague Charles Cottrell was born in Tormarton in 1893 to parents William and Flora Cottrell, he was brother to Reginald, Edgar, Lydia, Nellie and Minnie. Their father was a farm labourer.

Montague served with the 3rd Battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment as a Lance Corporal. Monatague was awarded the British, Victory and 1914 Star and Clasp medals
