Philip Woollen was born in 1894 in Iron Acton, to parents Alfed James and Henrietta Wollen of Coombe End in Old Sodbury. He was brother to Frank and Robert. Their father was a farmer and was born in Iron Acton. Philip also worked on the farm

Philip enlisted in Bristol and served with the 1st Royal Gloucestershire Hussars and the Gloucestershire Yeomanry as Private 2402. He was Killed in Action in Palestine on November 12th 1917. Philip is buried in the Gaza War Cemetery, he was awarded the Victory, British War and 1914/15 Star medals

Philip Woollen is mentioned on both the Old Sodbury memorial Lych Gate and the Chipping Sodbury and District War Memorial Cottage Hospital board, now at Yate and District Heritage Centre under Old Sodbury. Philip is also named on the family gravestone in Iron Acton Churchyard
