Further information:

On the day of his death Philip was serving aboard the H.M.S. Penelope, a Royal Navy Light Cruiser which was on route from Anzio to Naples travelling at a speed of 26 knots. In spite of the vessel's considerable speed, the German submarine U-410 managed to strike her with two torpedoes, one of which hit the boiler room, causing the ship to sink immediately. 415 of the crew, including Philip and the captain went down with the ship. There were 206 survivors.
