On the day of his death Richard’s Armstrong Whitworth Whitley aircraft took off from Linton-on-Ouse for Bremen. The bombing mission was successful but, on the way back, the aircraft crashed into the North Sea 20 miles east of Aberdeen and there were no survivors.
