Ronald Alexander James Gwyn (spelt with 2’n’s on the memorial).

Ronald married Marion Best on New Year’s Eve 1941. He worked in the engine room of the troop-carrying ship the H.M.S. Karanja, which had been converted from an ocean liner.

Served on the H.M.S. Karanja. Naval Auxiliary Personnel (Merchant Navy). On the morning of the 12th November 1942 at 05.30 am after Karanja had landed troops at Bougie, Algeria, she moved back out to sea and was attacked by German Ju88 bombers. She was hit by at least two bombs and an oil fire broke out amidships which spread rapidly. By 8.30 am the crew had to abandon ship and shortly afterwards it sank. Ronald died 2 days later from injuries.
