Further information:

Samuel was born in Eastville Bristol, the son of a general labourer and the second youngest of five children with two brothers and two sisters. His mother died when Samuel was aged 15 and his father moved to Wales to live with his eldest son Joseph and work in the mines. In 1911 Samuel was serving with the 2nd Glosters in Malta. His younger brother Silas died in the service of his country seven months after Samuel.

The 2nd Glosters landed in France in December 1914 to fight as part of the 27th Division. Just 3 months later, Samuel died from wounds that he suffered during the Battle of Eloi (14th – 15th March 1915). The battle was a victory for the British.
