Samuel was born at Littleton-upon-Severn, the son of a farmer and the second eldest of five children with two sisters and two brothers. One of his younger brothers Edward also saw war service and both brothers served and returned.

Samuel married Adelaide Cox Grove, a farmer's daughter in 1923 and they had a son James born in 1924. In 1939 Samuel was working as a dairy farmer at Moor Farm assisted by his son.

Samuel died at home and his death was not war related.
