Stanley was born at Oldland, the son of a nurseryman and gardener and the youngest of two children with an older sister Daisy. He attended Colston Collegiate School Stapleton where he is remembered.

Stanley transferred into the Royal Air Force from the British Army and joined the Royal Flying Corps in 1915. He was described as a promising member of the Flying Corps. Stanley came home on leave shortly before his death and on returning to Farnborough, he became ill and died five days later from spinal meningitis.
